Andrea Valadez

Growing up in Southern California as a daughter to proud Mexican immigrants, I was always aware of the inequities that face communities of color. I saw how our communities were ignored and often undervalued by the media - I now strive to change that narrative. I started my journey at my college newspaper, first as a staff writer then as editor-in-chief, and have been covering education for the Monterey Herald for about a year. In this time I have learned so much about the power of strong local journalism and I'm grateful to continue learning through the Local News Fellowship.
