Carly Heltzel

Carly joins the fellowship as a recent graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's journalism program, where she served as News Editor for the award-winning Mustang News. She became serious about journalism in high school while reporting on housing injustices in Silicon Valley, and she is eager to immerse herself in housing reporting in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Previously, she interned at Lookout Santa Cruz, where she covered undocumented inmates, threatened Indigenous resources, the county’s unsung animal control department, mountain communities facing grim fire conditions, emerging housing developments, homelessness, affordability and more.
